Guitar Academy

Dates: July 1 — 14

The Sewanee Summer Guitar Academy is a two week residential program for high school classical guitarists that runs concurrently with the Sewanee Summer Music Festival.

Academy participants will learn:

• How to develop solid fundamentals in technique, interpretation, and tone production
• How to practice and prepare for performances
• Preparation for college auditions, music competitions, and career opportunities
• An overview of guitar repertoire, applied music theory, and practical skills for guitarists

In addition, a major portion of each day will be devoted to performance, including opportunities guitar ensemble and mixed instrument chamber groups,  performance class, and master class with music festival faculty William Yelverton, and other special guest artists.

Academy participants will be featured in a grand finale performance at the Guerry Garth on Saturday at 11AM, part of the Festival student chamber music series. These final concerts are free and open to the public.

ApplicationProspective Academy participants need to submit an application via GetAcceptd.com. Applicants need to submit a 5-7 minute video of their best performance of an etude, study, sonata movement or other solo work.  You do not need a pianist or a professional recording, we simply want to know your current playing level, for guitar ensemble programming and placement.  Two shorter works, or one longer work, will be fine, please just represent your current playing level. If you have any questions, contact the festival office.

Tuition: $1,600 includes housing, meals, and all instruction.

Q: Does the tuition cost include housing and meals?

A: Yes, the tuition includes room and board for the duration of your stay.

Q: Does the tuition cost include access to all performances?

A: Yes, all performances are open to Academy participants.

Q: When will I find out if I have been admitted?

A: Typically within 1—2 weeks of submitting your application. Admission to Academy Programs is rolling and will be granted on a first-come-first-served basis on qualification. Submit your application soon to ensure your spot in the Academy Program of your choice.

Q: Can I come late or leave early?

A: We prefer for Academy participants to attend the full session. If you have to come late or leave early, tuition will not be pro-rated.

Q: Is there a waiting list for Academy Programs?

A: Yes, students who apply once the program is full will be placed on the waiting list and admitted on a case-by-case basis as openings become available.

Q: Can I request a special diet in the dining hall?

A: McClurg Dining Hall has a range of diet options, from carnivore or pescetarian to vegan or vegetarian. When you complete your admitted student form, you will have the opportunity to share any dietary restrictions with us.
