Festival Fellowship Program

Exceptional orchestral musicians across all instrumental areas (age 21-28) invited to apply for the Sewanee Summer Music Festival Fellowship Program

Festival fellows will perform perform leading roles in orchestral and chamber music programs in the festival. These chamber groups will perform in a range of concerts and events including community engagement programs, student composer readings and traditional chamber music performances.

In addition, Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops, seminars and professional development sessions geared towards the development of both orchestral and chamber music careers in the 21st century. The Festival Fellowship cohort will meet regularly with selected guest conductors as well as participating in programs with our faculty and festival administration.

Festival Fellowship, Strings

Up to fourteen Festival String Fellowships are available for young professionals – violinists, violists, cellists and double basses – between the ages of 21-28. Fellowships will cover full tuition and housing costs for the 2019 Sewanee Summer Music Festival

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Perform as a principal player of the Sewanee symphony
  • Perform in chamber ensembles as assigned by the faculty. These ensembles will perform on the regular student chamber concerts and participate in community engagement performances during the festival
  • Assist with sectionals and participate in chamber music coachings for other ensembles
  • Other studio support as needed

Festival Fellowship, Winds and Brass

Up to twelve Festival Fellowships in wind and brass instruments will be available for the 2019 SSMF season. These fellowships will cover full tuition and housing costs for the 2019 Sewanee Summer Music Festival.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Perform as a principal player of the Sewanee symphony
  • Perform in chamber ensembles as assigned by the faculty. These ensembles will perform on the regular student chamber concerts and participate in community engagement performances during the festival
  • Assist with sectionals for the orchestras and various chamber ensembles
  • Other studio support as needed, including light administrative work

Festival Fellowship, Percussion

One Festival Fellowship in percussion will be awarded for the 2019 SSMF

In addition to playing principal (either principal percussion or timpani, depending on selected candidates interest and needs of the ensemble) percussion Fellows will be expected to:

  • Arrive on Thursday June 14 to assist with equipment set up and inventory
  • Stay until Tuesday July 16 to assist with equipment breakdown and storage
  • Manage and maintain inventory
  • Assist as a sectional and chamber music coach for both orchestras.

Festival fellowship, Piano

One Festival Fellowship in piano will be awarded for the 2019 SSMF

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Performing orchestral keyboard parts in the Sewanee Symphony
  • Chamber music assignments
  • Assisting with younger piano students
  • Assisting the piano faculty in organizing piano studio recitals
  • Other duties as assigned
